If you want leads from your website, you need a way for visitors to contact you. The three most common options are contact forms, live chat, and AI chat. They have very different performance profiles, and one of them is actively costing you enquiries.
Contact forms: the standard option that underperforms
Contact forms are on most small business websites because they're easy to add and look professional. But their conversion rates are poor — typically 1 to 3% of the visitors who see the form actually fill it out and submit it.
Part of this is the friction. A form asks the customer to fill out fields, often requires them to articulate their need in a structured way, and gives nothing back until someone checks their inbox and replies. The one situation where a form still makes sense
Contact forms are useful when you need structured data from customers — specific technical specifications, detailed project briefs, or regulatory information. If you genuinely need customers to fill out a structured document before you can help them, a form makes sense. But even then, combining a form with a chat widget means the AI can handle the initial conversation and then direct customers to the form when needed.
The simple answer
If your goal is to capture the most leads from your existing traffic, AI chat outperforms contact forms by a significant margin, and outperforms live chat in any situation where you can't guarantee a human is there to respond. For the typical small business that's open during certain hours but has customers researching around the clock, AI chat is the most practical and highest-performing option available.
